Canada geese mate for life and remain together throughout the year. In a given pair the male is usually larger than the female. The female selects the nest site, builds the nest and incubates the eggs. The male will be on constant guard and will do its best in leading predators away from the nest area.
When I was working on my bird film Feathered Friends I noted the same geese came back again to nest on a tiny island mound in a beaver pond the following year.
