The initial Development Permit for Phase One of a new proposed development plan for Valemount was approved by Council at the January 9 Village of Valemount Council meeting.

The permit would allow for the construction of a new service station and convenience store to be built on the east side along Highway 5 and 17th Avenue (across from the Rose Cottage Bed & Breakfast).

According to Kevin Halsey of Emerald Developments Ltd., developer for the project from the Sylvan Lake, AB area, construction is anticipated to begin in early spring.

“We’re going to get in the ground as soon as possible,” says Halsey. “We’re hoping for the end of February or early March.”

Halsey also stated that the brand for the service station will be Chevron. He also confirmed that other phases are anticipated for the property, part of which would involve the construction of an 84-room hotel for phases two and three, although these have yet to be brought forward to Council for approval.

Since any major development that runs along the highway requires approval by the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure (MOTI), the Ministry has also yet to give its approval before any phase of the development can move ahead.

According to CAO Adam Davey, the Village should hear word from the Ministry by the end of the week, clearing the way for final approval of the first phase of the project at the next Council meeting.
