One February 30 years ago Winter Sports Abound In Valemount

The Valemount Winter Carnival that took place during February 6 -15, 1987 was organized by the newly formed Parks and Recreation Commission. The Commission had only been in active existence for two years at the time, and were responsible for scheduling and fee structures for the Ball Park and Arena in Valemount and had been appointed to do these tasks by the village Council.

The week-long event was spearheaded by members of the Parks and Recreation commission and included Barb Dehnke, Jim Senft, Rhonda McNee, Kersten Brisch (Chairman) Denny Rathbone, Flo Gibson, Dale Froescul and Vicki Podetz (Village liaison).

Some of the successful events in the Carnival ’87 were a Pioneer Day where local merchants and their staff dressed in pioneer garb, an Open House at the CIBC Bank with coffee and donuts, Bonfire, Wiener Roast, and Sleigh Rides at the Fire Hall, Casino Night at the Lions Hall, Pancake Breakfast put on by the Canoe Valley Skating Club, Dog Sled Races at Jackpine Road, Lions Concession behind Chevron gas station, Broomball Game at Fire Hall Rink – Village vs. RCMP, Family Dinner at Community Hall, Teen Dance, Flapjack Breakfast at Legion Hall, Turkey Shoot at Curling Rink, Winter FunDay for both Schools,

X-Country Skiing at Jackman Flats, Crib Tournament at the Legion Hall, Badminton Tournament at Elementary School, Youth Concert at the New Life Sanctuary, Hospitality Night at the Alpine Motel put on by the Timber-line Sno-riders, Snowmobilers activities at Allen Creek, Helicopter Rides, Snowshoe Baseball, Bannock Making Contest, Snow Sculpting at Centennial Park, Children’s Fun Day at Elementary School, another Bingo at the Seniors Hall, Ice Hockey games with Valemount, McBride, Aberdeen, 100 Mile House, and Horizon teams participating, Dance at Community Hall, Poker Derby, Snowshoe Races, Live Music at the Valemount Hotel all week and the big wind-up ceremonies at the Secondary School’s Gym.

Yes sir! That was quite the week! But, could it happen today? Perhaps a new generation of residents will re-awaken the Community Spirit that has been dormant for so many years. Volunteers, all working on the same page, could make it happen again.
